Carrick, who took control of his first game in the Champions League in midweek, guided Manchester United to a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Villarreal, ensuring the team’s progression to the next round. He and his players will hope to take confidence from that performance, but they will have a far tougher test against a Chelsea side in fine form.

While there is still optimism that Ben Chilwell will be able to play for Chelsea this season, he will not be available until the New Year at the earliest due to knee ligament injury sustained against Juventus.
N’Golo Kante twisted his knee in midweek and will be out of the game today.
Harry Maguire is suspended for United, but Luke Shaw, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood might all return.
