For Vasiliy Lomachenko, the path to competing for the undisputed lightweight title appears to be straightforward yet uninteresting. If Lomachenko can defeat Jamaine Ortiz on Saturday (6:15 p.m., ESPN+), he will be in position to challenge undefeated champion Devin Haney in early 2023.
Although ignoring an opponent in favor of future challenges might backfire, it’s difficult to believe Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KO) doesn’t see Ortiz as a relatively simple obstacle to overcome. Lomachenko is a huge -2500 favorite to raise his hand inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, and the oddsmakers seem to agree.
Since losing to Teofimo Lopez in an event for three of the four lightweight world titles in October 2020, Lomachenko has found himself back in the form that has long made him one of the best in the sport overall. In his 2021 campaign, Lomachenko easily defeated genuinely tough opponents Richard Commey and Masayoshi Nakatani before facing George Kambosos Jr., who had defeated Lopez to win the undisputed lightweight championship.
