Davis will put his belt on the line against little-known challenger Nunez who is ranked No. 2 by the WBA, despite not facing any prominent opponents and having only three fights scheduled for 10 rounds in his career. However, Nunez does have power as evidenced by his KO total. While he does have some pop in his hands (he stopped Elvis Torres in just 28 seconds in June 2018) many of his knockouts are likely due to his level of competition.

To say Davis represents a significant step-up is an understatement. Most would regard Davis as one of the top talents in the lower weight classes. Many fans are pining for him to face the likes of WBO champion Jamel Herring, Joseph Diaz, IBF champ Tevin Farmer or WBC titleholder Miguel Berchelt.

Unfortunately, network dividing lines and what appears to be an unwillingness to match Davis against elite competition is preventing fans from seeing the best matchups.

Davis’ power is the real deal, as is his overall explosiveness. It appears he is eager to test himself against other top names, but he also badly wanted to perform in his home state of Maryland. Earlier this week, Davis received the key to the city of Baltimore from Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young.

“Boxing is a very important aspect of my life,” Davis said. “I know a few people that used to box that I came up under that got killed due to the violence in this city. I thank God for allowing me to stay in the gym and for allowing me to remain focused on my goal to become a professional boxer. Bringing boxing to Baltimore will help bring a lot of inspiration to the city, especially to the young kids out there on the streets that may not have any other way out.”

This is being set up as a showcase fight for Davis who will hopefully be in the ring with competition fans can recognize in his next bout. As of early Friday, according to MyBookie.ag, Davis is listed as a gargantuan minus-5915 favorite to defeat Nunez.
